New rider info for Melbourne free sessions

Introduction

Thank you for your inquiry. Riding a Green Cab (GC) is a fun job that keeps you fit and provides you with a flexible way to make a good income. Essentially you run your own pedal taxi business, following the guidelines and training provided by Green Cabs.

The following information will help you decide if becoming a GC rider is for you. It includes information on:

  • basic requirements
  • costs vs income – lease and bond payments; potential income
  • training
  • uniform and kit
  • what to do now

Basic requirements

You must be reasonably fit. You should also be a ‘people person’. If you like providing service and like engaging with all types of people, you are probably suited to GC work.

As we can also ride on the streets you need to demonstrate that you have road knowledge to operate in the roads as a car.

GC does not employ you. As a rider you are a self-employed contractor who hires a bike from GCs by paying a ‘lease’ fee. In Melbourne Green Cabs leases cabs for full week and weekend.

Our week starts on Wednesday to Tuesday night. New riders receive a FREE first week. Lease prices for the further weeks vary depending on the season (peak, shoulder or low).

All leases are paid in advance by direct transfer into the GC account at least one day prior to your week shift starting. Our lease week runs Wed-Tues.

Current lease fees

Please refer to the attached indicative lease fees file to give you a general idea of what your lease may cost at different times of the year.Lease fees are subject to change depending on current business conditions.

Lease fee payments: All leases are paid in advance by bank transfer two days prior to your shift. Late payments incur a 10% late payment fee. No lease payment = no cab

Bond:

There is no bond commitment for your start, Green Cabs provide you with the gear for your start, and all we ask is to you return it on the same conditions as you received it.

If you lose, damage or wear out any of the kit items we issue new riders at training (see Rider’s kit info below, GC charges a replacement fee

Income

An average rider who works a minimum of 35 hrs per week should expect to take 2 or 3 times, and sometimes 4 times the lease fee paid. Your income is ALL that you take in fares while riding. Income will vary according to:

  • your experience
  • your sales ability
  • your fitness

Uniform and kit

Uniform – All GC riders hire a basic uniform and kit from GC. It includes 6 items:

  • 1 pair shorts (non-cycling shorts or padded cycling shorts)
  • 1 short sleeved shirt or singlet
  • 1 jacket
  • 1 helmet
  • 1 multi-tool
  • 1 black water bottle
  • 1 black blanket

The uniform and kit must be returned to Green Cabs in good condition when you leave. If any items are worn out, damaged or not returned with your kit the replacement cost will be deducted from your bond. You keep the water bottle valued at $7.

Additional kit items

Riders can also purchase additional GC branded items. Prices are as follows:

GC gear Price
cycling shorts $70
non-cycle black shorts $20
green/black short sleeved shirt/singlet $40
netti short sleeved cycling shirt $50
jacket $60
helmet (not branded) $35
cap $10
multi-tool (not branded) $25
water bottle (not branded) $7
rider ID $15
cycling gloves (not branded) $20
cab rain cover $15

GC uniform policy: Riders must always wear a branded GC uniform whilst riding for GC. No ‘non-branded’ garments can be worn externally. Riders should wear their own black shoes and black socks.

Damaged or lost kit items: Riders who lose or damage uniform items will be charged at the rates listed above – this amount will be deducted from your bond when you leave GC.

Training

All GC riders must complete a comprehensive training session. The session covers riding and bike management, safety, attracting customers, GC fees, insurance, customer charges, rank sites, operating behaviours and a range of other topics. You will be taken out on a Green Cab and visit rank sites at various locations.

Following training, you can start riding at a time that suits you!

Training is held at 84 Clarke st, South Melbourne. Please check the email you received for the times.
